This beautiful agricultural area also has the largest open-air market. The Karatina Kikuya Market brings people from all over the highlands together. You'll stop at a local refreshment center and then tour the market, learning about the area's produce with many opportunities for buying locally manufactured crafts and socializing with the people. Afterwards you'll continue to the town of Nanyuki in Kikuyuland, where we've arranged for a special tour of the private Weavers Association, a benevolent women's organization that recruits and trains young girls in the art of weaving the area's prime wool. The organization has developed ecologically sound ways to dye the wool which are patented worldwide. Weavers produce shawls, rugs, wall hangings and a variety of other woven goods and create jobs for hundreds of area women. Samburu is known for its vast herds of elephants. Transfer to your luxurious permanent tented camp that is situated right on the river, where you can often watch elephants frolicking and bathing.
